The University Auditorium is part of the series of conceptual projects which investigates the use of a local materials - in this case volcanic rock in Mexico City. The auditorium sits delicately on the campus of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México on the outskirts of the botanical gardens. A walkways meanders through the site and leads visitors to the sunken auditorium. The building remains invisible from within the gardens due to its submerged construction and vegetated roof. Thick walls are constructed from volcanic rock, providing a cool interior in the hot climate. Vernacular examples of volcanic stone construction were studied to determine the methods of construction.
